LyseNTech Selected as a Final Awardee for a Ministry of Health and Welfare R&D Project“Leading the Fight Against Antimicrobial Resistance”

 

LyseNTech, a bacteriophage-focused biotechnology company led by CEO Heejoon Myung, announced on the 2nd that it has been selected for the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s 2025 Infectious Disease Prevention and Treatment Technology Development Program, under the initiative for developing innovative solutions to unmet therapeutic needs. The project was selected through a highly competitive process, with an acceptance ratio of 9.5 to 1.

The two-year project aims to develop synthetic bacteriophages and endolysins as novel antibacterial agents targeting Gram-negative bacteria. LyseNTech will serve as the lead research institution, with Ajou University and Kangbuk Samsung Hospital participating as collaborating research institutions.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming increasingly serious and has been described as a “silent pandemic.” For example, it has been reported that during the COVID-19 pandemic period from 2019 to 2023, the number of deaths associated with antimicrobial resistance exceeded the number of deaths caused by COVID-19. The challenge of AMR is expected to become even more critical as the global population continues to age. At the same time, the antibiotic development pipelines of major pharmaceutical companies have largely dried up, highlighting the urgent need for innovative breakthroughs.

 

A LyseNTech representative said, “LNT103, LyseNTech’s endolysin pipeline targeting Gram-negative bacteria, has received the world’s first regulatory approval of an Investigational New Drug (IND) application for a Phase 1 clinical trial involving a Gram-negative-targeting endolysin. We are currently preparing to initiate the Phase 1 clinical trial.”
